Carrot juice: topics at a glance

Fresh carrots at the weekly market

What is freshly squeezed carrot juice made of and what does it taste like?

We prefer to squeeze carrot juice from fresh carrots that are organically grown. This makes us feel better about just washing the carrots and not peeling them. Also, organic carrots are said to have higher levels of vitamins and phytochemicals than conventionally grown carrots. We also recommend using regional products, the carrots are fresher and this way you support local farmers!
Carrots are not only available in orange, ther is around 30 carrot varieties - the varieties mainly differ in their colors: from light yellow to orange and red tones to purple. These color differences are also noticeable in taste. The darker the color, the sweeter the taste. The taste of the carrot juice varies accordingly: really dark orange carrots produce a sweet carrot juice, while the lighter variants make the carrot juice taste less sweet. If pure carrot juice is too sweet for you, you can combine it with some lemon or ginger, but also with other vegetables or fruits. Be inspired by our favorite carrot juice recipes.

Is carrot juice healthy?

For us, freshly squeezed carrot juice is just as much a part of a conscious and healthy diet as celery juice, sauerkraut juice or green smoothies. Alternative physician and cancer researcher Dr. Johanna Budwig (1908-2003) is said to have prescribed her patients a glass of freshly squeezed carrot juice for strengthening and regeneration every day. We can't judge to what extent the daily consumption of carrots or carrot juice has an anti-cancer effect.

Plenty of beta-carotene: Good for skin, eyes and immune system

Looking at the nutritional content of carrots, it quickly becomes clear why the orange beets and their juice are so healthy: Carrots score high on vitamins such as the vitamin B, vitamins A, C, E and K, but they are also a source of many minerals - especially the relaxation mineral potassium. A special nutritional feature of carrots and carrot juice, however, is the high content of carotenoids - the secondary plant substances that give carrots their color.
Carotenoids include beta-carotene, which carrots and freshly squeezed carrot juice have plenty of. Positive effect, beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A has a crucial role for the health of our system/body. Vitamin A is said to be an effective antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radicals and counteracting skin aging - in other words, anti-aging. However, it not only protects the skin, especially the eyes, which is why vitamin A is also known as the eye vitamin. The body is said to need vitamin A for a healthy intestine, for an active immune system (especially for the maturation of immune cells) as well as a for good functioning fat metabolism.

Prepare carrot juice in Angel Juicer

How can I make carrot juice myself? Which juicer is suitable?

In order to make freshly squeezed carrot juice you need a juicer. This extracts the juice from fresh carrots either by squeezing with high force (slow juicer) or by centrifuging (centrifugal juicer). The non-liquid components of the carrot are collected as pulp in both methodes. The pulp can be used for vegetable pattys or as animal food.

To maximize the nutrients in the carrot juice, we recommend using a slow juicer. As the name suggests, a slow juicer works slowly - i. e. at approx. 40-80 revolutions per minute, the carrots are slowly squeezed against a screen by an auger. This process not only ensures an efficiency, but also minimizes heat generation and oxygen exposure during the juicing process. As a result, heat-sensitive enzymes and vitamins are retained, the juice is less oxidized, as indicated by its bright color. Compared to a centrifugal juicer, the carrot juice from a slowjuicer has a much richer full-bodied taste. A centrifugal juicer, relies on a fast juicing process. The carrots are squeezed against a sieve at around 15,000 revolutions per minute using centrifugal force - in terms of production time, this is certainly an advantage. That much speed does not only generate heat, it also swirls more oxygen into the juice - both lead to a loss of nutrients during the juicing process. Therefore we rely on slow juicers, as we want the highest possible nutrient content !

Carrot juice with oil: Do I need to add some oil to freshly squeezed carrot juice?

In order to better absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, E or K, the additional or simultaneous consumption of oil is recommended. Those who follow this opinion simply add a few drops of linseed or olive oil to the finished carrot juice. In our opinion, this is not absolutely necessary if you eat fatty foods before or after drinking carrot juice.

What is the shelf life of freshly squeezed carrot juice?

Freshly squeezed carrot juice has a shelf life of about 24 hours (if kept in the refrigerator). Nevertheless, even when well chilled, it loses nutrients - e. G. through oxidation. We therefore recommend that you enjoy the carrot juice as fresh as possible or at the latest a few hours after preparation. This way you can be sure that the carrot juice contains the maximum of nutrients

Carrot juice - rich in beta-carotene

How much carrot juice should I drink? Can too much carrot juice turn my skin orange?

Whether you have a glass of carrot juice every day or use carrot juice as a cure for 4 weeks, is an individual decision. When consuming very large amounts of carrot juice, it is said that the beta-carotene in the juice, can turn your skin yellow or orange - most likely visible on the face or palms of the hands. This discoloration is said to be harmless, as it has no effect on the body or internal organs and disappears within a short time.

There are times where we drink 200-300 ml of carrot juice every day - especially when the first local carrots arrive at the store, their freshness enchants us. However, so far we cannot report of any discoloration!

Carrot juice with beetroot

Buy carrot juice or make it yourself?

Clear recommendation: Carrot juice is best made with a juicer. There are 3 reasons for that being said :

  1. Nutrient density: ready-made carrot juice from the supermarket is a highly heated product. This means that although this carrot juice can be kept unopened for a long time, it has lost many nutrients due to preservation - including heat-sensitive vitamins as well as the enzymes that aid digestion.
  2. Tastes better: There's really no arguing about taste, but we must point out the taste of freshly prepared carrot juice. It tastes much milder, more natural and simply fresher than the purchased, highly heated version
  3. No extra sugar: Most ready-made carrot juices contain not only carrots, but also additional sweeteners such as sugar, sugar substitutes or honey. If you've ever tried freshly squeezed carrot juice, you know it doesn't need any extra sugar or honey!

Freshly squeezed tastes great, no comparison with store-bought juice. I had bought too many carrots and then pressed out of necessity, because I usually do not like carrot juice. But freshly squeezed is something else, now I will test your recipes, they taste good, you can tell just by the ingredients. Thank you

I find all your recipes wonderful... I often use greens from the garden but I always mix in carrots and beet and apples and some ginger. I have noticed that my skin stays tan longer if I drink carrot juice regularly - which I do in the winter. People often ask me if I've been on vacation, I can only attribute it to the carrots.... and I love the taste of these wonderful things.... thank you and warmest regards, Christina

Hi!
Can I also make carrots into juice in the Bianco Puro blender? For example, in your recipe with sweet potato, use carrots instead?
Thanks
7/18/2023
Carla von GrüneSmoothies.de
Hello Mari,

thank you for your comment.
Your Bianco blender is less suitable for juicing. You could puree the ingredients with a little water and then filter through a nut milk bag. But that would not be my recommendation. Then I would rather advise you to try vegetable smoothies. You can find recipes here.
And of course you can blend sweet potatoes and/or carrots....

Best regards,
Carla

Can not I just make them in the Vitamix .
With the juicer always a pity that the pomace is bad to use.

Hello,
I make myself in the period from early August to late March, a daily juice from a kg of carrots, 1x each orange, kiwi, lemon, a piece of celery and a piece of ginger in my juicer, always add a dash of oil and drink directly after preparation a large glass and the rest I take to work .
So I come already for many years well through the uncomfortable season

Hello,
I came across a juicer at the breakfast buffet on vacation. I thought it was so great to have fresh juice every day that I had to get one at home too (from Philips).
I juice carrots, apples and ginger every 2nd day .... plus sometimes organic oranges (I leave some of the peel on there because it actually makes it a little creamy) or celery. Organic lemons I will also try because of the ideas here.
That makes a three-quarters of a liter ... of which I then save half for the next day - of course in the refrigerator airtight closed.

Hello Mikel,

nice to read that you have discovered juicing for yourself. Have fun with it furthermore!

Ernst
Hello Carla;
since I don't have such a high quality juicer, there is always some residual moisture. I find it too bad to then put the pulp in the organic garbage can and mix it with rolled oats, grated cheese, sour cream, oil/eggs and spices.
They are then baked in the oven as vegetable patties. Now for my question:
I don't feel like making fresh vegetable juice every day, so I press a week's supply and freeze it in portions. Before drinking, I take out a portion in the evening to defrost for the next morning. Do you lose a lot of nutrients and vitamins in the process?
NS: Thank you for all the information and recipes.
7/12/2022
Carla von GrüneSmoothies.de
Hello Ernst,

thank you very much for your comment. Great idea for the pulp! Thanks for sharing your roast recipe.
Regarding your question, nutrients are always lost when freezing or storing. How much is lost, I can not tell you.
Therefore: Best to drink fresh:)

Best regards,
Carla

Michaela
Dear all,
thank you so much for your delicious recipes, I also have a juicer because I have been on this celery juice trip. My main problem is actually a lot of waste. So that I tried some recipes with the pulp, but eventually you can't stand them at some point. Not even my goats wanted to eat the pulp anymore. That's when I went from juicers back to smoothies. What do you do with all that pulp?
7/12/2022
Carla von GrüneSmoothies.de
Hello Michaela,

we also do it again and again like you :)
I also like to give away the pulp to dog owners. Of course it is also great to make compost with it, if you have the opportunity.

Carla

Our basic recipe is always carrot, apple, orange, some oil/fat because of the carrots and of course turmeric with 2 to 3 peppercorns and ginger. Since then I have no arthritis pain in my big toe joint which the surgeon already wanted to stiffen.

Drink every 2 days freshly squeezed carrot juice and have discovered this year that ca. 5 cm fresh cucumber juiced along, tastes wonderfully fresh. Also some fresh wild garlic leaves are super! Caution: becomes a little spicy !

Hello Karin,

thanks for your comment; with wild garlic it definitely goes more in the delicate vegetable juice direction. I will try it out. Thanks for your inspiration. I also really, really like to use dill with cucumber. Have you ever tried that?

Hello Carla, I don't know why one can't get enough of carrot juice either. The juice also tastes delicious with pineapple - very refreshing. And when you make everything yourself, you know what's in it.

Hello Conny,

It just tastes amazing; pineapple goes perfectly with it and for me, there always has to be a lot of lemon juice. It's making my mouth water again, and I'm going to juice some carrots today. Thank you for the inspiration. By the way, something else I really like right now: beetroot with a bit of apple and lots of lime juice. Maybe something for you too?

Since I bought a Vitamix 750 from you approximately two years ago and I am now facing a shortage of space for an additional juicer, I would like to inquire if it is possible to make a carrot smoothie with it. Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you could inform me about the advantages and disadvantages of a carrot smoothie compared to carrot juice.
